Contain the water first
Place a bucket or container under the leak, and if the ceiling is bulging with trapped water, carefully pierce it with something narrow to let it drain in a controlled way rather than letting it collapse unpredictably.
Move belongings out of the way
Get furniture, electronics and anything valuable away from the affected area. Water damage to possessions is often more costly than the roof repair itself.
Don't go up on the roof yourself
In heavy rain a roof is genuinely dangerous to access. Leave the roof itself to a professional, however tempting it is to go and look.
Call rather than wait it out
Leaks rarely stop getting worse on their own during a storm. Calling early means a roofer can often make it safe the same day rather than the damage spreading overnight.
