Directing water away from vulnerable joints
Flashing is shaped and layered so that water is directed over the top of any junction and away from the gap beneath, rather than being able to seep directly through it.
Overlapping layers
Sections of flashing overlap in the direction water flows, so each layer sheds water onto the one below rather than allowing it to work backwards under a joint.
Sealing without rigid bonding
Lead is dressed to fit tightly against adjoining surfaces without needing a rigid seal that would crack under normal building movement.
Why gaps or shortcuts fail
Any gap in the overlap sequence, or flashing that's too short to properly cover a junction, creates a direct route for water — which is why proper installation matters so much.
